Whether you need your electricity bill for an HRA claim, a deposit dispute, an address proof, or simply to track your usage — downloading it online takes less than two minutes once you know where to go.
The challenge is that India has dozens of electricity distribution companies — DISCOMs — each with their own portal, and the process varies by state and provider.

Note: City-specific guides for Bengaluru (BESCOM), Mumbai (MSEDCL/TATA/Adani), Delhi (BSES/BYPL), Chennai (TANGEDCO), Hyderabad (TSSPDCL), and Pune are available as separate articles on Dwellble. [City-wise electricity bill download articles — link here when published]

What You Need Before You Start {#what-you-need}
Across all states and providers, you will typically need one of the following to access and download your bill:
Your Consumer Number or Service Number — printed on your existing bill or on the electricity meter. This is the primary identifier used by all electricity boards. Your Registered Mobile Number — for OTP verification on most portals. Your Account Number — used by some providers instead of or in addition to the consumer number.
If you are a new tenant and do not have a previous bill, ask your landlord for the consumer number — it is printed on any past bill for the flat. If the landlord cannot provide it, note it from the meter installed at the property.

General Tips for All States {#general-tips}
The consumer number is your most important identifier — keep it noted somewhere accessible. Almost all portals allow bill download without creating an account — just the consumer number is enough for view and download. For registered accounts, most portals send bills by email automatically — register your email for monthly delivery. If a portal is not loading, try the provider’s official mobile app — most major DISCOMs have Android and iOS apps that are often more stable than the desktop portal. Never pay electricity bills through third-party apps that ask for your login credentials — always use the official DISCOM portal or authorised payment gateways.
What Tenants Should Know About Electricity Bills {#tenant-tips}
As a tenant, clarify with your landlord before moving in whose name the electricity account is in, how bills are calculated and shared if multiple meters feed one account, and whether there is a “common connection” surcharge above your individual meter reading.
For HRA purposes, if the electricity bill is in the landlord’s name, your rent receipts are the primary document — the electricity bill serves as address proof. If you have transferred the connection to your name, the bill itself serves both purposes.

Final Thought
Downloading an electricity bill in India takes two minutes once you have your consumer number. The variation between states is significant enough that knowing which portal to use first saves you time. Bookmark your DISCOM’s portal and keep your consumer number saved.
