Setting up internet in a new apartment in India is faster than it used to be — but the options, speeds, and availability vary significantly depending on your city, building, and area.
This guide covers everything from checking what is available in your building to getting connected in the shortest possible time.
Table of Contents
Check the Building First {#check-building}
Before applying to any provider, ask your building’s maintenance staff or your landlord one question: which internet providers have cables already run into this building?
In most gated communities and newer apartment complexes, one or more fiber providers have already laid cables through the building’s infrastructure. Getting a new connection from a provider already in the building typically takes two to three days. A provider laying new cable into the building can take two to four weeks.
Also ask: does the building have a shared broadband arrangement — a single building-wide connection with individual connections split off? Some societies negotiate bulk broadband deals. If one exists, joining it is typically cheaper and faster than setting up an independent connection.
Main Internet Providers in India {#providers}
[IMAGE BLOCK 2 — Mid-article]
Jio Fiber (Reliance Jio): Currently the most widely available fiber provider across Indian cities. Plans typically start at ?399 per month for 30 Mbps. Available in most metros and tier-1 cities. Apply at jio.com or call 1800-889-9999.
Airtel Xstream Fiber: Strong coverage in metro and tier-1 cities. Plans start at ?499 per month. Often includes OTT subscriptions. Apply at airtel.in or visit the nearest Airtel store.
BSNL Bharat Fiber: Government provider with wide geographic reach including areas where private providers are limited. Plans vary by state. Apply through bsnl.in or your nearest BSNL office.
ACT Fibernet: Strong presence in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, and other major cities. Known for consistent speeds. Plans start at ?499 per month. Apply at actcorp.in.
Hathway / Den / Tikona: Regional providers with strong presence in specific cities and areas. Check availability in your specific area.

How to Apply for a New Connection {#how-to-apply}
The application process is similar across providers:
Visit the provider’s website and enter your address or pin code to check availability. If available, select a plan and submit your application online or call their customer care. A technician will call you to schedule a visit and installation. Documents typically required: Aadhaar or any government ID, a passport-sized photograph, and your address proof — your rental agreement works for this. Payment of the first month’s plan cost and sometimes an installation charge or router deposit.
For Jio Fiber and Airtel, the entire application can be completed online in under ten minutes once you confirm availability.
Typical Installation Timelines {#timelines}
For providers already cabled in your building: two to five working days from application to live connection. For providers requiring new cable infrastructure: one to four weeks, sometimes longer in buildings where society approval is required before cable laying. BSNL timelines vary more widely — in some areas same-week installation, in others two to three weeks.
If your building management or RWA has restrictions on new cable installations, you may need a no-objection from the society before some providers can install. Check this before applying to avoid delays.
What to Check Before Committing to a Plan {#before-committing}
Before committing to a plan, check the minimum contract period. Most providers in India now offer month-to-month plans — avoid long-term contracts unless the discount justifies the lock-in for your expected tenancy duration. Check the router and equipment arrangement — is the router provided, rented, or must you purchase it? Check the fair usage policy — does the “unlimited” plan have a speed reduction after a certain monthly usage threshold? Check customer reviews for your specific area — speeds and reliability vary significantly by location even within the same city and provider.
Temporary Internet While You Wait {#temporary}
While waiting for your fiber connection to be installed, use:
Your mobile data plan as a hotspot — sufficient for basic usage and video calls. A portable Wi-Fi router — available from Jio, Airtel, and others on prepaid plans, no installation required. A neighbor’s temporary guest access — if the building has a common network, some society offices allow temporary guest credentials for new residents.
What to Do When You Move Out {#move-out}
Give your broadband provider at least fifteen days’ notice before your move-out date to avoid paying for an additional billing cycle. Request disconnection formally — in writing or through the app. Return any rented router equipment. If you are moving within the same city, most providers offer free relocation if they have coverage at your new address. If you are moving to a new city, disconnect fully and apply fresh at the new address.

Final Thought
Internet setup in a new Indian apartment is now faster than almost any other utility connection — fiber providers often install within days, not weeks. The key step is checking building infrastructure first, choosing a provider already cabled in, and applying immediately on move-in day rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
